Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Year 4 2026-27: Term 1 Week 6

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week we have been learning about:

Literacy: Our learning was focused around a new character known as ‘The Dreamgiver’. After watching his story, we created our own word banks full of descriptive words and phrases. We then used these to build a list of similes before writing and editing our own character descriptions.

Maths: This week one Maths set finished their work on place value whilst the other made good progress with adding and subtracting – mainly refining their column addition skills when using numbers with up to 4-digits and using this to help them solve some short word problems. Next week, one set will begin their work on adding as the other tackles some column subtraction tasks.

Spelling: This week’s focus was on the prefix ‘inter’, meaning among or between. Examples included ‘interview’, ‘international’ and ‘interact’.

Guided Reading: We read the short poem ‘The Rainforest Doesn’t Talk’ by Edie Bakker. The children then used the text to answer questions about the meaning of the new vocabulary.

Science: The children thought about the various habitats around the world – and locally – before designing their own local habitat to protect the wildlife we would expect to find living near us.

Art: The classes produced some great artwork based on the concept of ‘Inside Outside’, using what they could see through a window (real or imaginary) to inspire their ideas. We are looking forward to seeing some of these creations on the Y4 display board in the school hall.

PE: In both rugby and hockey we played some small sided matches, making sure we played a certain number of passes before we could score. Next week, we are aiming to expand the size of our teams and use the tags to improve our understanding of the ‘tag’ aspect of tag rugby.

Topic: The children learnt about how tornadoes are formed and the range of effects these can have.

RE: We discussed the meaning of the term ‘religious harmony’ and wrote down some ideas about what this looks like.

School Photos:

These will take place next Tuesday (13th October). The children will have their individual photograph taken as well as one with their sibling(s).

Have a nice extended weekend,

The Y4 Team
