Dear Parents and Carers,
This week, your children have been studying the following:
Literacy: Having reread the story Escape From Pompeii, we took on the roles of young journalists and began to draft and edit our own newspaper reports. So far we have drafted our lead paragraph and the main body of our articles about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. We also created some questions and answers to find more information for our reports. We aim to complete our final pieces next week.
Maths: Place Value continued for both classes this week. The children have compared and ordered numbers to 10,000, studied Roman Numerals and began rounding to the nearest 10. There will be more rounding practise next week as we close in on the end of the unit.
Spelling: This week’s focus was on the prefixes ‘im,’ ‘ir,’ and ‘il’ to change the meaning of a word. Examples included ‘mature’ becoming ‘immature’ and ‘regular’ becoming ‘irregular.’
Science: We discussed which types of animals were invertebrates and expanded our knowledge of the ways in which we could classify creatures and plants.
Art: We learnt about drawing objects in proportion, thinking about the sizes of various parts of an object and how we can reflect this in our own artwork.
PE: In rugby, we looked at attacking phases of play that focused on the best way to use our wingers and added a defensive pressure to speed up the decision-making and pace of the attacking moves – something that we also worked on in our hockey lesson.
Topic: We learnt about earthquakes and had a go at putting things in order on the Mercalli Scale – something which measures the impact and damage of an earthquake.
Computing: Those who were not at Forest Camp made good progress with their Scratch games. Those at Forest Camp this week will get to do the same next time.
Harvest Assembly:
This morning, both classes came together to perform a Harvest-themed gameshow style assembly to the school. The children sung the classic ‘Cauliflowers Fluffy’ before hosting a brief question and answer themed game. The other year groups enjoyed being able to join in with the singing, and many staff commented on how impressive Year 4 were in delivering their lines and promoting the overall message of Harvest.
If you have anything that you would like to donate to the Springwater Church food bank, Mrs Conway will be taking donations next Monday (28th September). Your children can bring these into class or leave them in the school office.
Forest Camp Dates:
Friday 2nd October: Mr Andrews’ class
You will be emailed nearer to the time of your child’s Forest Camp session.
Have a wonderful weekend,
The Y4 Team
