Dear Parents and Carers,

Our first full week of the new academic year is complete. This is what we have been getting up to:

Literacy: The children began the week by reading the story Escape From Pompeii by Christina Balit. After making some predictions based on reading the opening page, the children did some revision of adjectives before adding some of their own to the sentences from the story. We will continue to base our work around this story next week.

Maths: We continued with place value this week, focusing on thousands, number lines and representing numbers up to 10,000. We will carry on with this next week.

Spelling: We have looked at some homophones (words that sound the same but are spelt differently) and near homophones (words that nearly sound the same) and had a go at using them in sentences. These words were: accept and except, knot and not, peace and piece, plain and plane, and weather and whether.

Science: We learnt about the word ‘classification’ and sorted various animals into a range of categories.

Music: The children have been listening to some short songs and thinking about the way the lyrics and background instruments form the structure of a piece of music.

Art: We learnt how to add shading to our drawing of objects.

PE: In rugby we learnt how to move forward whilst passing the ball backwards, and in hockey we developed our knowledge of passing and taking the ball at speed to or from a teammate.

Topic: We began our topic ‘Extreme Earth’ by studying the various layers of our planet.

RE: We learnt about some of the features of the Zoroastrianism, one of the world’s oldest practicing religions.

Computing: The children continued to develop their skills by using conditions alongside sensors on the Scratch programme.

PSHE: We had a discussion about exercise and physical activity before thinking about all the reasons why regular movement is good for us.

Homework:

Your child’s planner has now been sent home, complete with their TTRS and Spelling Shed logins. The usual TTRS and Spelling Shed homework has been set, and we would still like the children to read at home at least four times a week please. If this is recorded in their planner accompanied by your signature, they will receive the usual reward of team points.

Forest Camp Dates:

Today, half of Miss Green’s class had their first Forest Camp session of the year. The upcoming dates for the rest of the year group are:

Friday 18th September: Miss Green’s class

Friday 25th September: Mr Andrews’ class

Friday 2nd October: Mr Andrews’ class

You will be emailed nearer to the time of your child’s Forest Camp session.
