On Monday we welcomed guest speaker Mikey Akers to SCPS. After hearing about his great work to raise awareness of the condition apraxia, we were keen for him to speak to our children about the power of hope, determination and friendship.
Mikey was born with apraxia, a neurological speech disorder that made a lot of things very tricky when he was a child, and since the age of 13 he has been determined to raise awareness of the condition. Mikey has travelled to places such as Pittsburgh, Dallas and Las Vegas to share his experiences, and has also been interviewed on various radio and TV shows, most notably the ITV documentary ‘Chris Kamara: Lost For Words.’
As well as campaigning, Mikey works as an Early Years Educator and has aspirations to become a SENCO.
He presented a whole school assembly before going on a tour of the classrooms and answering any questions the children had. Mikey also met with our SENCO, Mr Coates, to gain further insight into the role.
Thank you for a great visit Mikey!
