what can I do when my child feels angry?

When children become upset, withdrawn, or angry, we ask them to tell us what’s wrong, to “use your words”, and explain how they’re feeling. But often children can really struggle to identify their own emotions. Emotions seem simple: happy and sad, angry, and upset, but actually there are many words we can use to describe feelings. Parents and carers have a vital role in helping children develop an emotional vocabulary that can help them express how they’re feeling more easily. The My Family Coach website has plenty of resources to help you. Their blog post, How to Help Your Child Understand Their Feelings
explains how behaviour is linked to emotions, and suggests practical ways they can help their child recognise their feelings, spot physical changes brought on by emotions, and express how they’re feeling in a healthy way. It’s aimed at primary-aged children but may be useful for older children, too.
