Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

KS2 Assemblies

Continuing our theme of ‘Inspirational People’ in our KS2 assemblies this term, three recent visitors have hopefully inspired the children to think of a world of wider possibilities.

Firstly, Mrs Ash took on the challenge of performing Heather Small’s ‘Proud’ (the song featured at Young Voices this year). None of us really knew what to expect, but Mrs Ash blew us all away with her talent and her performance, accompanied by a 200-strong choir on the choruses.

Next our Art Club leader, Elaine Newman, presented her favourite piece – a pencil-drawn tiger. She explained her inspiration for the work, and some of the techniques she had used to produce it. She also spoke of the things that drive her work, and a little of the history of her training and art career to date.

Finally, Dr Jimmy Ash-Young came in to discuss being a commercial pilot. He described his typical day, including how to get the plane ready for the flight, how to board the passengers, and the mechanics of landing. He then discussed some of the engineering principles that enable planes to get off the ground.

Thanks to all three guests. We are planning music, chemistry and rugby in the next few weeks.
