Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

On your Bike 2019

Now in its 13th year, the family event saw 500 entrants between the ages of 5 and 75; as children, mums, dads and grandparents picked from a 6, 12 or 20 mile lap starting and finishing in the playground at Sonning Common Primary School.

An army of more than 50 volunteers helped marshal the course, manage registration and provide hot food and drink to every finisher. The youngest participant this year, 5-year-old Leo N left the event having learned to ride a bike in the playground. ‘Seeing a young child come along and learn to ride a bike with Dad whilst his older brother was out riding the course with Mum is brilliant. Having whole families take part and go home smiling with a big sense of achievement is exactly what this event is all about’ said Geoff Davis, one of the marshals for this year’s event.

Commenting on the event, which has been run in the village since 2008 and is supported by local businesses including AW Cycles and Ella’s Kitchen, 8 year-old Sadie S, who did the 12 mile route said: “It was a really fun day, I have never cycled that far before – but it was great doing it with my Dad and friends”.

Penny Snowden, the founder of the event said ‘the total money raised from this year’s On Your Bike was £4000, which brings the total raised since the first event to over £50,000. All money raised goes to local charities and this year went towards funding trips out for elderly residents of the village with FISH and towards a new play area for Sonning Common Primary School’.
