Hello, and welcome to another weekly update from Year 6. Your children have stood up to the challenge of mock SATs week admirably! Hopefully they now have a better sense of what to expect in May. We will continue to revisit old SATs papers throughout the year, but in lots of different formats: some might be completed in pairs, others will be done step-by-step with the teacher. Please remember, though: we will never compromise all the other wonderful things your children will get to do in Year 6. SATs are just a small part of it.
This week, we have been up to the following:
- In literacy, we have been completing spelling, grammar and reading tests. After Woodlands, we’ll be starting to think about writing persuasive leaflets.
- In maths, as well as three test papers, we’ve either continued our work on place value, or we’ve started the daunting-sounding unit of ‘addition, subtraction, multiplication and division’. Not much to do there, then!
- In history, the children wrote a report on the what conditions were like for the different classes on the Titanic. First Class passengers, for example, had Turkish baths! After Woodlands, we’ll be learning about some of the famous people who embarked.
- In computing, we started making presentations about ‘Computers Of The Past’. We’ll be finishing them after Woodlands.
Spelling words
This week, the children were learning ‘challenge’ words (i.e. words that follow normal set patterns). They were variety, criticise, ancient, leisure, government, sincerely, opportunity, recognise, cemetery and equipped.
Woodlands
As you are very much aware, we head off to Woodlands on Monday morning. We have sent a couple of emails (one on Wednesday, one on Friday) which hopefully have all the information you need. Over the week, please keep an eye out on the Year 6 section of the website – we will be uploading nightly updates of what we’ve been up to.
Secondary school applications
Mrs Rae has posted a very useful guide on applying for secondary schools on the website. It includes the important dates and some useful links – you can find it here.
We hope you have a lovely weekend, and we will see you very bright and early (7.30 at the latest!) on Monday morning.
