Hello and welcome to another weekly update from Year 6. It was great to see so many of you at the Curriculum Sharing evening on Wednesday. Hopefully the barrage of information proved useful! This week, your children have been up to the following:

• In literacy, we have been looking at the eerie imagery of the picture book, The Watertower, and writing descriptions using similes, metaphors and personification. Next week, we’ll be turning these ideas into a setting description.
• In maths, we’ve all started with place value – understanding how numbers are constructed, as well as how they can be compared and ordered.
• In topic, we started our history topic of The Titanic. We learned the timeline of the disaster, from launch to sinking. Next week, we’ll be analysing some sources from the ship to help us understand the story.
• In art, we spent some time thinking about the difference between graffiti and street art. Believe it or not, we’ve also started designing our Christmas cards!
• In music, we learned about some of the features you might find in protest songs.

Spelling words

This week, we looked at words that feature the letter ‘y’ that sounds like /i/. They were: antonym, crystal, lyrics, mystery, oxygen, rhythm, symbol, symptom, system and typical. Please feel free to test your child on these spellings – that would really helpful.

Woodlands kit

First of all, thank you so much to those of you who managed to fill in the parental form overnight – it is very much appreciated! Also, as well as the Curriculum Sharing slides, the ‘Documents to download’ section also has a kit list for Woodlands. It might be a useful way of making sure you have everything when you are packing.

PE

Do remember that PE is on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and at the moment, they are both outdoors. Please make sure that you children have the right kit.

Homework

Your child should have brought home their first sheets of paper homework on Thursday. As well as making sure they do it, please help them to remember to bring it back the following Thursday. However, do bear in mind that part of the reason we do this is for them to work on their independence! So, help them…but not too much.
