Year 4 2026-27: Term 1 Week 3

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week, your children have been studying the following:

Literacy: We began the week by thinking about our senses – see, hear, smell, taste and touch – and used these to help us form some expanded noun phrases based on our knowledge of a normal day in Pompeii. From here, we used these phrases to help construct a setting description. Next week, we will be planning our own newspaper report on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Maths: There was more work on place value this week. The children have been partitioning numbers up to 10,000, finding 1, 10, 100 or 1,000 more or less, and plotting and estimating numbers up to 10,000 on a number line. We will build on this next week.

Spelling: This week’s focus was on the prefix ‘in’ to change the meaning of a word. Examples included ‘active’ becoming ‘inactive’ and ‘correct’ changing to ‘incorrect.’

Science: We continued with our work on the classification of animals by deciding whether they were a vertebrate or invertebrate, and then sorted them into groups based on whether they were a mammal, amphibian, reptile, bird or fish.

Music: We had a play on some instruments this week – mainly various types of xylophone – and thought about the different sounds made by each key.

Art: We practised using texture, tone and shading in our drawings.

PE: In rugby, we revised the concept of passing and moving before practising take-ons – something that we also worked on in our hockey lesson.

Topic: We looked at volcanoes and how they are formed.

Computing: The children used their knowledge of how to create and edit variables in Scratch to plan their own game.

PSHE: There were some good discussions about our energy levels and the things that can maintain, increase or reduce these.

Optional Homework:

Your child has been given a paper copy of this term’s optional Topic homework. There are no expectations for all (or any) of these tasks to be completed, but if your child would like to have a go at some of the tasks and bring them into school, they will be rewarded with the appropriate amount of team points.

Forest Camp Dates:

Friday 25th September: Mr Andrews’ class

Friday 2nd October: Mr Andrews’ class

You will be emailed nearer to the time of your child’s Forest Camp session.

Have a great weekend,

The Y4 Team
