Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Week 4

Dear Parents,

Our highlight this week has been BIG maths where the children recorded times and distances on several sporting activities.

English

After writing some fantastic chapters on Friday the children have been creating a new character for the Malamander story. They have enjoyed drawing this character as well as using grammatical and vocabulary features to improve their writing.

Maths

In maths we had a fantastic lesson playing the board games they had created in the last BIG maths. We have continued working on rounding numbers to the nearest 10,00, 100,000 and 1,000,000. In todays BIG maths lesson the children:

  • Measured how far they could throw a bean bag
  • Timed how fast they were able to run a lap
  • Counted how many speed bounce jumps that they could do in a minute
  • Created the biggest number in place value targets

Topic

This week we have continued to study Aboriginal art and the children designed their own boomerangs. Next week we will be learning about latitude and longitude lines as well as understanding hemispheres.

Touch Rugby

On Thursday Miss Snowden took 2 teams to a touch rugby festival at Shiplake College. The morning started with a fantastic Touch Rugby Masterclass led by Shiplake College sports scholars, where the children engaged in many different drills to refine their touch rugby skills! Once they had completed the activities, the tournament begun! We started with a thrilling match where Sonning Common 1 played Sonning Common 2! Every player on the team gave it their all, and this match ended in a draw. After that, both teams went on to play teams from Shiplake Primary and Danesfield Primary. The matches were all very close, and there was some excellent sportsmanship on pitch. We ended with an awards ceremony, where although we knew we hadn’t won, we were thrilled to receive the sportsmanship team of the tournament! A very special mention going to Miles R, who was awarded the ‘Try of the Tournament’ by Shiplake College students!
