Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 1 – Week 6

Dear Parents,

We have had another busy and creative week in Year 5! A particular highlight was sharing our homemade maths games with the children in Kites.

English

This week, we have been reading Gruffalo Granny. We began by creating story maps to sequence the Gruffalo’s adventures, before planning our own versions featuring characters from traditional tales. The children have also explored rhyming couplets and descriptive language. We look forward to bringing their finished stories together in a class book!

Maths

We have continued to develop our understanding of area and perimeter, focusing on finding the perimeter of polygons and the area of rectangles. During BIG Maths, the children created addition board games, with some children visiting Kites to share and play their games with the children.

Science

In Science, we have been learning about the changes people experience as they grow older, continuing our work on human development.

Looking ahead to next week

Next week in English, the children will become reporters as they investigate the contents of a mysterious chest! They will practise using formal language, plan a newspaper report and write their articles for the school magazine.
