Dear Parents,

We hope you have had a lovely weekend! Your children have settled in well to their Year 5 routines, and have shown a fantastic attitude to learning since returning in September. Thank you to those who attended our Curriculum Sharing evening last week. We have added the powerpoint to the files on the Year 5 Webpage, so hopefully you will be able to access that if you need to refer back to it.

English

Last week in English we started reading the book Malamander. The children are thoroughly enjoying this story, and it inspired some amazing writing on Friday, where the children predicted what happened next in the story. They enjoyed listening to the rest of the chapter today to see if what they had predicted matched with what the author had written.

This week we will be continuing to read the book Malamander, focusing on using figurative language and building suspense in their writing. This will help the children to plan a new chapter which they are going to write next week.

Maths

In maths the children have been recapping their knowledge of place value, ensuring that their foundational knowledge is secure so that we can build on this in the coming weeks. The children have been set their TTRS homework, and we are pleased to see how many of them have already accessed this.

Topic

This term’s topic is Australia. We are really excited about the lessons we have coming up about this, in particular where we will be exploring Aboriginal art, before making some of our own. Last week the children brought home their termly topic homework which is based on Australia. We are really looking forward to seeing what they find out!

Notices and upcoming dates

Just a small reminder that our PE days are on Monday and Friday. Children also need a spare pair of shoes for OPAL play this autumn, and these will be kept at school so that the children’s school shoes don’t get too muddy!
