Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 5 Week 6

The whole school participated in a theme day this week. Each year group looked at a particular country, learnt some interesting facts about the geography of the chosen country and then created some art work inspired by that country. Year four’s chosen country was China. We looked at a map to find out where in the world China is and why the Great Wall was built. We also looked at the Terracotta Army and created our own army of kindness. To finish off the day, we did a collaborative piece of art and created a collage of a Chinese dragon to be displayed in the hall.

On Tuesday, the children took part in the planned lesson to discuss our changing bodies and asked some great questions. Year 4 approached the session thoughtfully and handled the topic with maturity. They engaged sensibly with the discussion and showed respect for one another throughout. The aim of the session was to help children feel informed, confident, and reassured as they begin to understand the changes associated with growing up.

In French, the children have been learning vocabulary about the beach. The children have drawn some fantastic pictures and labelled them appropriately. In topic, we looked at some of the most powerful kings in the Anglo-Saxon heptarchy (7 kingdoms).

The children did well on their practice round for MTC this week and are in a good position for the official check after half term. Please help your child to practice as much as possible over half term on any times tables they find more tricky. The children have been sent home with some activities to practice their times tables over the break. We appreciate that some of you may have busy schedules over the holidays, but we encourage you to support your children with completing as much as possible over the break.

Finally, just a reminder that all toys and fidgets should remain at home unless agreed with an adult in school. If the warm weather continues after half term, please send your children in with water bottles, sun hats and cream.

Have a wonderful break.
