Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 3 – Week 3

Update

This week we have continued to plan for our upcoming Big Write based on Leon and the Place Between. The children have been setting out their story and working hard to build and break suspense with their writing skills. In maths we have continued to work on multiplication and division, learning different methods to help us. The Romans is fast becoming a favourite subject and we have discovered all about how far the Empire spread over hundreds of years! Science has been electrifying, literally, as we have made different types of circuits and learnt all about complete and incomplete circuits.

Roman Day

We will be running a Roman Day for the children on the 22nd February. This is a brilliant chance to really bring history to life and learn about how the Romans lived! On the day they will take part in shield formations, complete Roman maths challenges (time to brush up those Roman numerals), try to entertain the emperor and try their hand at some Roman crafts. There is no charge but we do ask for help with a couple of things:

  • Children should be dressed up as something Roman! Please don’t feel you have to buy something new, we are very good at turning any material into a toga! If you are struggling for costumes send in a single bedsheet (plain colours are best) and some safety pins, we can do the rest. Obviously February is still a cold month so please make sure children have adequate clothing on underneath. We also ask that sandals are NOT worn.
  • We will be making Roman shields in the last week of this term (9th February) and we need lots of cardboard. Thick boxes are best (cereal boxes are not large or thick enough) and should be of a good size. Please send in anything you have as we need enough for 48 shields!

Lunch arrangements will be the same as usual and there is no change to the school day.
