Recycling

SCPS work hard to reduce our environmental impact and save waste from going to landfill.  We already have solar panels on the school roof and our swimming pool roof and we have recycling bins for paper and metal in all our classrooms and offices.

Terracycle Green School Project

We send Terracycle hard-to-recycle rubbish and they award us points which we can redeem for donations to our PTA. You can recycle Pringles Tubes (but not the lids)into the bins outside in the cycle shed, or in the foyer of the library

Recycle old pens

You can recycle any old pens, including markers and felt tips, from any brand in one of our Edding recycling boxes.  The recycling is shipped to Germany where they extract the plastic and metal (including aluminium) and use it to make new ECOline marker pens.

Recycle To Read

We take part in the Recycle to Read campaign, a national initiative helping families reduce waste and recycle more by recycling broken hard plastic toys, while also earning rewards that support reading and literacy.

How it works:

  • Take any broken hard plastic toys (no toys with electronics or batteries – see the full list of items below) to a participating large Tesco store.  Currently the Tesco on Portman Road in Reading is our closest store, but check the map in case closer ones are added.
  • Importantly you need to register the drop off on-line so we can get one Planet Care Point point (one for each drop off regardless of the number of toys in the drop)
  • There is a School Leaderboard which puts SCPS in the running to earn up to £500 of book vouchers, and all schools and families collecting points are also entered into a monthly prize draw for a chance to win exciting prizes too.

Toys that ARE accepted:

Small, broken hard plastic toys (e.g. action figures, dolls, car tracks, doll house parts and other hard plastic toys and accessories). These can include some parts made from other materials, like metal screws, rubber wheels, or hair on otherwise hard plastic dolls.  Please note: As a size guide, toys should fit inside a shoebox. Toys should be clean and dry. They should not be deposited in plastic bags and please only recycle a few toys at one time as space in the recycling units is limited.

Toys that are NOT accepted:

    • Toys with batteries or electrical components (e.g. battery-operated/rechargeable toys, toys using cables/leads or with solar panels .
    • Toys that don’t fit completely in the bin – such as sit-on toys with wheels
  • Plush/soft toys
  • Toys with fabric parts and soft/plush toys
  • Wooden toys
  • Board games (hard plastic parts/accessories from these are accepted)
  • Slime and rubber toys
  • Inflatables (e.g. beach balls, swimming devices, inflatable bath toys)
  • Any bags or toy/product packaging

Solar Panels

Our solar panels were installed in 2017 on the roof of our KS2 building by Low Carbon Hub giving us a 22.68kW installed capacity which generates around 20 300kWh every year.  That saves over 4 tonnes of CO2 a year. You can see the details on the People’s Power Station

We also recycle electrical cables and printer cartridges (storage bin in the Cycle Shed).

Old clothes and shoes

SCPS are able to collect your unwanted clothing and shoes at your convenience.  The green collection bin is in the library car part at the front of the school and we receive 40p per kilo from the materials collected by Astra Recycling who are a small business based in Hampshire, working since 2013 to promote textile recycling and reduce waste to landfill.
