Term 5 Week 3 update

Hello, and welcome to another weekly Year 3 update. Lots of writing done this week ahead of our big Charlie and the Chocolate Factory diary entry, but your children have risen to the occasion!

This week, we have been up to the following:

  • In literacy, as mentioned, we have been writing diary entries as Charlie Bucket, the night before he goes to the chocolate factory. We’ve been trying to include modal verbs and subordinating conjunctions in our work – feel free to test your kids!
  • In maths, we’ve either been working on mass and capacity or time. Mr. Burrows’s maths set will be looking at fractions again next week – have a look at this video for a quick refresher on how it is taught at SCPS.
  • In topic, we were learning about the Arctic and Antarctic. This fact blew some minds: in the South Pole, the sun doesn’t set on Christmas Day!
  • In computing, we started using Google Forms to make our online surveys.
  • In PSHE, we talked about mental health and self-care.

Swimming and PE

This Thursday, it’ll be the turn of Mr. Burrows’s class to go swimming. Miss Green’s class should come to school in PE kit.

Maths Made Clear

You may have noticed the YouTube link for a film about fractions above. This video is part of a project called Maths Made Clear, which SCPS has set up to help parents with their maths skills. Research is quite clear that those children who discuss maths at home will perform better at school, and we want to help! As part of this, we have made a series of nine films that explain how we teach certain concepts (such as addition, subtraction and fractions), and gives ideas on how you could talk about maths at home. Click here to have a look. Year 3’s own Mr. Burrows made these films, and so, as well as using them yourself, we would really appreciate it if you could spread the word!

We hope you have a lovely long weekend, and we will see your children bright and early on Tuesday morning.
