Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Welcome to Term 3!

Hello, and welcome to the first Year 3 update of 2024! We hope you enjoyed the break. Your children have settled back into school life beautifully, hitting the ground running!

This week, we have been up to the following:

  • In literacy, we have been looking at poetry. We particularly enjoyed what it is about a tongue twister that makes your tongue twist!
  • In maths, we are back into multiplication and division.
  • In history, we have started our new topic of the Ancient Egyptians. We used artefacts to try and understand what life might have been like back then.
  • In art, we investigated the style and characteristics of Ancient Egyptian art. This will build towards us making our own papyrus and scroll.
  • In RE, we talked about our own personal worldviews, and who or what might influence them.

Documents emailed home

You should have been emailed a rota for Thursday swimming and PE this term, and a list of optional homework tasks. If you would rather have a print-out of these, please do get in touch with either Miss Green or Mr. Burrows.

PE (and clothing)

This is just a confirmation that outdoor PE is still every Monday. In the current cold snap we’re experiencing, please make sure your children are dressed in layers and that they bring gloves in with them.

Swimming

This week, it will be Miss Green’s class’s turn to go swimming. Mr. Burrows’s class should come to school in PE kit (please see above).

Ancient Egypt Day, this Tuesday

We are very excited about Ancient Egypt Day on Tuesday (16th)! You have been emailed some guidance about what your children could wear on the day, but we just wanted to reiterate that you should not need to spend any money and loads of time on this! A large white T-shirt and a ribbon tied over normal clothes would suffice! Please note the following:

  • Please make sure that your children are wearing sufficient clothes underneath their costume. We will still be going outside for break and lunchtime, and it will still be extremely cold.
  • Although the advice you’ve received says that leather sandals would be nice, we would advise your child wears normal shoes and socks. Again, we will not be experiencing a subtropical climate on Tuesday!

The following is information from the event organisers about clothing. Please note that we will all be acting as ‘normal’ everyday Egyptians, and costumes should reflect that. We are not gods or goddesses, Pharaohs or mummies!

Looking like an Egyptian will help you feel like an Egyptian. Costumes do not have to be fancy – you can do a lot with a large white T-shirt! Here are some ideas:

Tunic: This can be a simple white dress for girls or a large white T-shirt for boys and girls. You can also make one from a pillowcase, or even an old sheet: fold it over, stitch up the sides and cut a hole in top for your head. Boys can wear with a belt, cord or sash around the waist, while girls may wear with a simple thin apron.

Sandals: Simple leather sandals are good, but any sensible footwear will do.

Collar: A collar is not essential, but you can make one with a circular piece of cardboard with a hole cut into it for your head. You can decorate it with Egyptian-style patterns.

We hope you have a lovely weekend, and we’ll see your children on Monday morning.
