Day two began with full bellies, bright eyes (mostly), and socks in all the wrong places. With energy levels still defying logic, the children split into activity groups for a day of full-on outdoor adventure. Two groups took to the tranquil waters of the Brecon Canal for canoeing, where teamwork was tested, splash zones were discovered, and directional control was… let’s say in development. Cries of “Left! No, your left!” echoed down the canal as boats spun gently in circles. One group even managed a solid few minutes of straight-line travel before someone got distracted by a duck. A highlight came when one child shouted, “Look! Mini cows!” while enthusiastically pointing at a flock of sheep. Geography, biology and comedy – all in one moment.
Back at Woodlands, another group tackled the outdoor climbing wall and high ropes course. Harnessed up and raring to go (or at least pretending to be), they scrambled, climbed and tiptoed through the sky-high obstacles with courage, determination and the occasional theatrical pause halfway up for dramatic effect. Shouts of encouragement from below carried many to the top, and by the end, even those who started the day hugging the first pole were begging for another turn.
Meanwhile, another group ventured out to Eglwys Faen in the Brecon Beacons for a proper caving adventure. After a scenic walk from the car park and a short moment of calm, they plunged into the cool, dark world of twisting tunnels, echoing chambers, and muddy crawls. Helmets were tested, torches were essential, and bravery was found in small, scrambly moments. Some children emerged proclaiming their new identity as subterranean creatures, while others just marvelled at how much mud one person can collect on a sleeve.
Dinner was a well-earned plate of sausages, mash, veg and gravy, followed by chocolate brownies with cream. Reports suggest a record-breaking speed of consumption. The evening wrapped up with a fast-paced game of photo orienteering around the site – combining navigation, observation, and a lot of enthusiastic running. Beds were finally found, pyjamas located (eventually), and silence slowly fell across the dorms – with only the occasional whisper of “Are you asleep?” to be heard. Everyone’s excited for another big day tomorrow. Hopefully with fewer missing socks… but we make no promises.
