Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Week beginning 22nd April

This term our main focus will be plants and we will all be growing our own beans as well as any other seeds that come our way! The children will be keeping a diary of the progress of their beans and making observations of any changes that occur. We will also be learning to distinguish wild and garden plants and becoming familiar with common plants and trees. If you would like to support this at home, then spotting common flowers and trees whilst out walking would be very useful.

In literacy, we will be doing a lot of phonics practice in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check next term. We have sent home a word list for the children to have a go at: the children need to spot the sounds – ‘special friends’ –  (they could underline them) and then sound out the word and say what it says. They don’t need to do them all at once, just a few every day. We are also trying out weekly spellings and there is an explanation on the sheet provided.

Maths next week will be simple multiplication and division: counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and sharing quantities in to different sized groups.

Our art this term is all about different kinds of weaving and we will be making simple box looms for an activity later on. If you have any shoes boxes or similarly sized boxes at home, please send them in! In Geography we will be learning about the UK – the main countries and cities that make it up – and RE will focus on taking care of the world.

Later in there term there will be a visit to the Earth Trust for bug hunting and pond dipping – more details will be sent to you nearer the time.

On Tuesday next week we are having our class photos: Miss Bartlett’s class normally do PE on Tuesday and so will need to come into school in their uniform and bring their PE kit to change into later.

Miss Snowden’s class will be swimming on Wednesday.
