Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Week beginning 2nd October

Dear Parents/Carers,

We have had another fantastic week in year one! We have been busy making and tasting our delicious fruit kebabs. The children have enjoyed peeling and cutting a range of fruit, constructing it onto a kebab stick for their friend to enjoy!

This week we have begun long phonics, the children should have bought home their phonics book on Wednesday. These books are for the children to read to you, to practice the sounds they have been learning in their phonics groups. It is a lovely opportunity to share some stories, and talk about what your child/children have been learning about at school. The comprehension questions at the back of the book offer plenty of opportunity for you to talk about the book with your child. The phonics books will be sent home in addition to your child’s book banded book and story book. We are more than happy for you to record when your child reads their phonics book in their reading record too!

In maths we have started to think about how we find one more or one less of a number. The children have enjoyed playing a range of counting games to support their learning. Games like snakes and ladders are brilliant to support children’s counting and knowledge of number, so if possible, we are encouraging you to play this at home with your children this week!

We are beginning to prepare for our Harvest festival celebrations! We are enjoying learning two songs as a year group: Cauliflowers Fluffy, and Dingle Dangle Scarecrow. If your children would like to practice at home, the links to the two songs are below.

You should have received the flyers this week in your child’s book bag which detail information about our school open days! We would love if your children were able to distribute these to friends, family, or neighbours who might be interested in coming to our wonderful school! We would really appreciate your help in distributing these amongst people you know.

Thank you for your continued support.

This week: Miss Snowden’s class are swimming on Wednesday.

Have a wonderful week!

Miss Snowden and Miss Bartlett
