Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Week Beginning 18th September 2023

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a wonderful week in year one! Your children have continued to settle into class this week taking things easy with play-based activities. We have been reading the story ‘The Colour Monster’ getting more in touch with our emotions. The children have enjoyed talking about how they feel and designing their own monsters to illustrate their feelings.

We have continued our daily phonics session, and we are continuing short phonics lessons next week, therefore children will not be sent home with Read Write Inc. Phonics books next week. In Literacy we have continued to explore at Handa’s Surprise and the children have created lots of amazing lists describing their favourite fruit and items they might take on a picnic! In DT and art we have been thinking about different fruits too, observing, drawing and describing their texture and appearance. Next week the children are looking forward to tasting different fruit!

In maths we have continued to sort objects into groups, as well as begun to count different objects. We have been thinking about counting a number of objects from a group, then identifying how many we have left.

We had a successful ICT lesson where the children learnt how to log on to the computers using their username and password! We were very proud of the children’s successes! Some of the children also practiced their mouse skills, but using paint to draw a picture!

We had an incredibly exciting day on Thursday as our newly trained Junior Active Leaders led us in a fantastic sporting event! The children enjoyed taking part in a variety of games that the Junior Active Leaders had invented. It was not only wonderful to see the year ones participate in the games with their friends, but we were also very proud of our wonderful year 5s and 6s who led the amazing games. We are looking forward to welcoming the Junior Active Leaders onto the KS1 playground to lead more playground games.

Thank you for your support with getting the children changed and ready for PE on their respective days.

This week: Miss Snowden’s class will be swimming on Wednesday!

Thank you to everyone who has already brought in their forest camp kit and wellies. Just a reminder Miss Bartlett’s class have forest camp on Monday afternoon and Miss Snowden’s class have their session on Tuesday afternoon. The children’s kit will stay on their peg and be sent home at the end of term, unless they have had a particularly muddy session!

As always if you have any questions please make sure you ask your child’s class teacher. We are always happy to help.
