Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Week beginning 11th September

Welcome to Year 1!

Your children have been settling in really well to their new routines and classrooms, but this can be very tiring for young children so you may find that they are ‘tired and emotional’ towards the end of the week. We are taking it slowly with play-based activities to help with this but, if you have any concerns, please do let us know.

The children are now in their new phonics groups and will be having a short lesson every day. In literacy this week we will be reading the story of ‘Handa’s Surprise’ to get the children thinking about different kinds of fruit. This links in well with our DT project where we will be cutting, peeling and chopping various fruits, building up to making a fruit kebab for a friend. Our writing this week will be making lists, so you could encourage your child by getting them to help you make shopping lists and reminders.

In maths we will be sorting objects by size, shape or colour and also doing lots of counting practice! In computing we will be learning to login in, which may take some time…and in science we will be looking at the human body and practising naming the different parts.

Miss Bartlett’s class have their PE lesson on Tuesday afternoons and Miss Snowden’s class have their lesson on Thursday afternoons. The children should come in wearing their PE kit and trainers (saves time on changing!)

Miss Bartlett’s class has Forest Camp on Monday afternoons and Miss Snowden’s class has their session on Tuesday afternoons. Forest Camp kit can be left in school on your child’s peg during term times – we will only send it home if there is a very muddy experience! Half the class will visit each week.

Miss Bartlett’s class will be swimming on Wednesday.

We’re looking forward to seeing you all at our Curriculum Sharing evening on Tuesday at 6.30pm – you should be sent a link from the office.
