Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 4 Week 1

It’s been a busy first week back and the children have all dived straight back into their learning.

In maths, we continue to apply our multiplication and division knowledge to working out fractions. Well done 4JM/KC for winning the TTRS battle and thank you to all those who participated. Engagement is increasing each time which is great! The next battle will take place over the Easter break but with a twist…watch this space.

In literacy, we have finished reading The Boy Who Grew Dragons but are continuing to work on it. This week, we looked at all the mishaps that have happened while our main character, Tomas, has been trying to hide his dragon from his Grandad. We discussed how this had made his Grandad feel and that an apology letter would be a good start to putting things right. The children then had a go at writing their own letter. Next week, we will look at writing a more formal letter.

On Thursday afternoon, we had members of Science Oxford join us with lots of K’nex resources. The children were challenged to become structural engineers; we investigated which shapes are stronger and put that knowledge to the test by building a bridge over river. There was some good problem solving skills being used to raise their structures high enough for a boat to pass underneath. Fun was had by all!

We’ve delayed the mosaic making as we currently don’t have enough resources for everyone to make their own. We appreciate that some children have brought in extra resources but it would be amazing if we could have a few more lids so that everyone can get involved. Margarine tub lids would work as well as ice cream tub lids. Don’t forget the decorations: beads, shells, dried pasta and buttons would make fabulous decorations! We will now be making these on Tuesday, so please raid your cupboards, fridges and freezers!

Many thanks,

The Year 4 Team
