It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…
The children have been practising ready for the Carol Concert next week and sounding amazing! And the classrooms are looking a bit more festive.
The children have now reached the end of the Iron Man story and had a go at creating a ‘one-pager’ where they used a template to pick out parts of the story that they enjoyed and the literary devices used. The children worked really hard on these and produced some fantastic pieces. Next week, we will look at the sequel to Iron Man, Iron Woman.
In maths this week, we have been continuing our multiplication and division work by looking at factors. We have been using arrays to help us with this.
In science, we have been looking at teeth and tooth decay. We set up an ‘eggsperiment’ where we used boiled eggs as a substitute for human teeth with the shell acting as the enamel. We placed the eggs into cup containing different liquids so that we could observe the effects these would have on our own teeth. We used cola, vinegar, orange juice, water, tea and kept one as a control. The children were surprised to see that the orange juice and vinegar had completely dissolved the shell. The cola had quite an effect as well, the shell had been softened so much that we were able to rub it away.
We had a go at making tints and shades in art this week. We started with a base colour and added small amounts of white to make tints and small amounts of black to make shades. The children learnt quite that it was easy to add too much black and make a very dark shade quickly!
You will have received a message about doing some research in preparation for the children creating a poster in the last week of term on our topic of mountains. The children are free to choose any mountain range and make a note of any facts that they find interesting. They can also choose to print off one or two images to include (we will be making the posters on A3). If you have any questions about this, please ask.
Some of the children have wanted a bit more of a challenge with their spellings, so each week there will be an optional 5 challenge words for the children to work out. This is not a required homework, so the children can choose if they would like to take on the challenge or not. The challenge is to work out the words from the clues. If they need a little help, this weeks words are: bicycle, accomplish, ambitious, calendar and consequence.
The year 4 team wanted to say thank you for making the time to chat with us for the parent consultations this week. It is a useful time for us to be able check in with everyone and update you specifically on the progress of your children.
Year 4 finished off their week with a live lesson streamed all the way from Antarctica! See last post for more details.
December dates: Wednesday 10th – Gift Room, Wednesday 17th – Christmas Dinner & Carol Concert, Friday 19th – end of term (1:15pm).
