Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 2 Week 2

Community sprit has been high this week: on Tuesday, year 4 joined the rest of the school in showing their respect to soldiers (past and present) by observing a 2 minute silence followed by listening to The Last Post. Thursday was World Kindness day, the children enjoyed a special assembly from Mr Spencer and made their own positivity notes for a school display and everyone looked amazing in their Pudsey ears and yellow t-shirts for Children in Need.

In literacy this week, we were putting ourselves into the shoes of the Iron Man and using the senses to imagine and describe what it would have been like to be buried in a pit.

In maths, year 4 are continuing with their multiplication and division work. We have discovered that, no matter how big, you can work out if a number in the 9 times tables by adding the numbers together. If the answer is 9, then it’s a multiple of 9 – for example 81: 8+1=9. We have also been looking at the links between some of the times tables (the 6 times table is double the 3 times table) and using 100 squares to notice patterns.

In other subjects, we used atlases in our topic this week to find out where the four tallest mountains in the UK are and also learnt about where Christianity began.

It’s beginning to look at lot like Christmas (feel free to sing that line!)…year 4 have been designing in preparation for their decorations to be hung on the Christmas hoops in the hall and have enjoyed learning how to play a simple Christmas song on the glockenspiels.
