Hello, and welcome to another weekly Year 5 update. We hope you had a fun and relaxing Easter break, and that your child and rested and raring to go for another few weeks of learning! There aren’t many to go until summer and Year 6…gulp. (Don’t panic!)
This week, your children have been up to the following:
- In literacy, we have started our brand new unit, looking at the writing of Jeremy Strong. We’ve read and worked on his short story, This Is NOT A Fairy Tale, and will next week be building towards writing the sequel!
- In maths, some children have been looking at shape, and others been looking at adding and subtracting numbers with decimal places.
- In topic, we all became Mayan mathematicians! We learned about their number system, which is in base-20. Ask your children if they can remember how it works!
- In science, we developed our own experiments to test what materials might keep a hot drink warmer for longer. Next week, we’ll conduct them!
- In computer, we discussed bullying online as part of a series of lessons on online safety.
Spelling words
This week, our spelling words are all adverbs of possibility and frequency. They are: certainly, definitely, frequently, infrequently, obviously, occasionally, often, probably, possibly and rarely.
Class photos
On Tuesday morning, both classes will be having their photo taken. Please make sure that your child looks their best for it!
Trip to Maidenhead Mosque
On Thursday morning, the children will spend the morning at the mosque in Maidenhead. Please make sure your child is at school at 8.45am so we can leave promptly at 9am. We will be returning in time for children to have a school lunch, so please do not worry about providing packed lunches.
The visit will consist of a short welcome, introduction and explanation of the external feature of the mosque. There will be a talk by an Imam in the main prayer hall and a tour of the mosque building. Finally, there will be a discussion session combined with a mini exhibition on Islam.
Performance Evening
This a reminder that the school Performance Evening is at 6pm on Thursday. It should be an excellent evening, in no small part due to the fact that lots of your children will be performing!
PE
PE will be on Monday and Friday this week, and they will both be outdoors, so please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for the variable conditions.
We hope you have a lovely weekend, and we will see your children bright and early on Monday morning.
