Hello, and welcome to another weekly Year 5 update. Let us hope that the sun is here stay! It makes such a huge difference the mood of a school when the sun out, and I’m sure the same is true at home, too.
This week, your children have been up to the following:
- In literacy, we have been writing our formal letters showing concern about the challenges facing refugee school children (based on the themes of our book, The Boy At The Back Of The Class). Some of the letters will be posted to the King!
- In maths, some children are working on understanding decimals, and others have been learning about the features of regular and irregular polygons, and 3D shapes.
- In history, we have continued with our topic of the Ancient Maya. Some children studied the gods that the Maya worshipped, and others acted as archaeologists, trying to work out what genuine Maya artefacts might tell us about their life and society.
- In science, we started our new topic of materials. We recapped what we knew about solids, liquids and gases, and checked our knowledge on how to change states.
Spelling words
This week, our spelling words all revolved around the dreaded ‘ough’! All these words contain ‘ough’ that makes an ‘or’ sound. Those words are: afterthought, bought, brought, fought, nought, ought, sought, thought, thoughtfulness and wrought.
Pencil case equipment
This is a gentle reminder that all children should be bringing in the equipment they need for lessons. Pencil cases should contain pencils, a rubber, a pencil sharpener, short ruler and a glue stick. Mr Burrows has given out between 20-30 pencils this term in his class alone!
Please also remember that we run a stationery shop at playtimes in the Year 6 classroom, where children can buy all these items for a small amount of money (glue sticks are the most expensieve, at £1).
PE (and the end of term)
PE will be only be on Monday this week, as we finish term at 1.15pm on Friday. Please don’t forget!
We hope you have a lovely weekend, and we will see your children bright and early on Monday morning.
