Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Nearly there…!

This week has seen us mark getting close to the end of term with a little bit of end of term testing.  Low stress stuff we hope, but obviously a useful marker for us in Reading and Maths, and an indicator of where we need to focus efforts in the new year.

Additionally, Literacy involved constructing a newspaper report featuring the story of Kevin the Carrot.  This is a one-minute film, which bizarrely morphs from a vegetable-themed kidnap situation into a full-scale emulation of The Greatest Showman, complete with mountains of food.  It ends with a big reveal – strangely it was an Aldi advertisement all along…

Anyway, it proved to be a very good writing prompt and the range of headlines and puns was impressive – ‘We are sure he will turnip again some day…!’

Maths has seen the back of fractions for a while (phew!) and will now move on to some more formal short multiplication and division.  Everything we do in maths aims to have a practical element, so that children see both why we are doing it, and how it might apply to them in real life.

We completed the Victorians topic with a look at Victorian inventions, and we may well top that off next week with a reading or viewing of A Christmas Carol, which perfectly fits the time period.  PSHE was on families, and the football unit this afternoon finished with a couple of small-sided games.

In addition we have spent time working on our contribution to the Christmas Carol Concert on Tuesday 19th December, at 6.00pm.  We really hope you can join us for this festive celebration, and we really need as many Year Five children to be there for the (very difficult!) song we have chosen to regale you with.

Children to the KS1 playground by 5.50pm please – we will organise them into year groups.

That same evening, the classrooms will be open between 3.20pm and 3.50pm if you would like your child to show you around.

Please could we remind you that the fourth and final group (Fire and Water from Y5RL) are due at Forest Camp on Monday afternoon.  Long sleeves, long trousers and wellies please.  Children can come to school in their kit, but please could they wear school shoes.

Have a fantastic weekend.
