End of week 6 in Year Five

Yes – unbelievably, six weeks have already passed since half term.  Less than two to go.

Please can we remind you that your child may have Forest Camp on Monday.  Please check the email, sent to Dr Loader’s class, earlier in the week.  Your child should know which week they are going.  It is broadly Air and Earth on Monday 11th December and Fire and Water on Monday 18th December.  Please send them with the appropriate kit on that day – it is fine for them to come to school in their kit.

On January 31st (2024) we have the legendary Year Five Ancient Greek Day.  This is a full interactive and immersive experience.  Your child will need a simple ‘Greek’ costume – more details to follow.  We will need a few parents to help support the event so if you can make it (and enjoy dressing up!) please could you let us know through the School Office.  Many thanks in advance.

This week, we have finished Street Child.  There was almost a sense of deflation at the end – it has formed a key part of literacy – with a range of associated activities each day – this term.  Everyone wrote a well-considered book review, with some already wanting to read the sequel.  Although fictional, the story is based on the real history of Dr Barnardo and his commitment to house and feed young people in the direst need.  The fact that Dr Barnardo’s is still a prominent charity gives the story a real sense of purpose.

Fractions have dominated our maths discussions this week, including addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers, with similar or related denominators.

PSHE this evening looked at the issue of respect, with a particular focus on self-respect and the steps you can take to look after yourself.

We also had a couple of topic sessions on Wednesday and football this afternoon.  This morning saw us attend the dress rehearsal of the KS1 Nativity Play, which was superb – hopefully some of you with younger children will get to see it.

Thanks for another good week – have a peaceful weekend.

p.s. we have also been preparing for the School Carol Concert on Tuesday 19th December.  We are really hoping you and your child can make it to this magical event.  6.00pm.
