Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Another busy week in Year Five

This week has seen a major writing task take place – a diary entry covering the escape of Jim Jarvis (the street child) from the workhouse.

There was plenty of preparation – each day has seen one or more chapters read out loud, with associated tasks.  Usually this has involved imagining, writing or drawing aspects of the story as it has progressed.  Jim is currently out there looking for his sisters who ended up somewhere else when he was sent to the workhouse.  We have yet to find out whether he finds them.

There were a few things we were looking for in the final write-up yesterday – including capitals and full stops, some ambitious language (not too many adjectives, but some really good ones), and perhaps exclamation marks to convey speech.

The results look good, and everyone really respected the need to write individually and in silence (rather than the more usual group or paired work).  We are actively looking forward to marking them.  Yes, really!

PSHE today covered the topic of friendship.  Building on last week’s description of what a good friend is, we discussed how friendships work, and why they sometimes go wrong.  We touched on what to do if something goes awry, and we will do some more on that next week.

Football today gave your children the chance to show off some serious control skills – bringing the ball down from on high with one touch.

Maths has focused on the first Y5 fractions units – especially the idea of equivalent fractions, and the requirement to ‘do the same to the numerator and denominator’ in order to find the simplest form.

Finally, there was an extended DT session on Wednesday where your cardboard boxes were transformed into the frames for cam toys – where circular motion is translated into up and down motion.  They should be finished next week.

Have a great weekend and see you Monday.
