Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 1, Week 4

Dear Kites Parents,

This week we have dived deeper into our feelings, beginning to understand how we feel at different times in the day and why we might feel that way. The children have created some of their own colour monsters which are on display, as well as a large cardboard junk modelling monster we we are excited to finish next week! The children have enjoyed a colour hunt around Kites garden, thinking about what colours they can see throughout the school too.

In phonics, the children have now been introduced to n, p, g and o. The children have loved meet Fred the Frog and jumping along with him when learning to blend sounds together to form words. In maths we are so close to reaching the number 10! We finished the week learning about Nina Nine from ten town. The children really enjoy learning all the number songs and tracing the numbers on the board too. Here is a game you could play at home to support number tracing.

The children enjoyed a fantastic perform workshop on Thursday, where they went on an amazing adventure through the medium of drama. In their bookbags there is a letter which tells you all about the workshop they joined in with, as well as some information about other drama workshops which run as an after school club.

This week outside, the children have all loved following recipes in the mud kitchen. They have worked together as a team to try and find all the ingredients they need to create some delicious creations. ‘Dandelion Soup’ was a particular favourite.

Next week, are going to be thinking about seasonal change and preparing for harvest. The book we will be focusing on is ‘Supertato!’ Here are some Supertato home challenges you might like to have a go at. We have our Harvest Festival celebrations in school on Friday. We will be making a donation to the local foodbank. We will be collecting non-perishable items like tinned goods and pasta. If you are able to make a donation there is a donation box by the school office.

Here are some links to the set 1 sounds we have been focusing on this week:

This term’s top tips!

Here is a top tip for term 1! There have recently been some cases of headlice across the school, and we wanted to make sure you were kept informed. Whilst lice are nothing more than a nuicence, it is important that children are checked on a weekly basis so that any head lice can be dealt with quickly before they are allowed to spread. Here is some simple advice you may wish to follow to keep headlice outbreaks to a minimum.
1. Check your child’s hair once a week

2. Use a lice comb with teeth close together to trap the lice. The comb is usually white in colour so the lice can easily be identified.

Reminders:

Kites Kitchen Menu – Term 1

Harvest Festival 3rd October– DONATIONS WELCOME in the form of tinned and dried food stuffs for our celebration. All donations will be given to Sonning Common Food Bank – please check their website or the Food bank app for items most needed.

INSET day 10th October – a little reminder that we have an INSET day on the 10th of October, the children will not be in school on that day.

16th October– School Disco. £3 including a snack and a drink. This is always a fun event, but can be quite overwhelming for our little ones. If your child dislikes loud noises, crowds or can be quite anxious- please could you chaperone your child to the event or only bring them for a short time. We would like to make the event as positive as possible for all involved.

We hope you have a lovely weekend,

The Kites Team
