Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 4, Week 2

Dear Parents,

What a lovely week it has been! We have thoroughly enjoyed seeing more of the sunshine. The children have loved running around outside without their coats on – it really feels like spring is here!

We have been really busy this week – on Monday we learnt all about different vegetables we enjoy with the launch of our ‘Eat them to Defeat them’ campaign. The children have earnt lots of stickers at lunch time this week for defeating all their veggies. Well done to the children who brought back their sticker charts – please feel free to bring them back next week so that we can award lots of team points. On Thursday we had a fantastic World Book Day – listening to stories from different adults across KS1 and learning all about Paddington in Kites. On Friday we enjoyed making marmalade sandwiches!

In Phonics this week, as well as completing phonics assessments, we have been practicing blending. We currently have a huge focus on blending games in Kites, here are some ideas for how to support your children with this at home.

In maths we have been thinking about 2D and 3D shapes. This has included shape hunts around the classroom, shape bingo and creating images using 2D and 3D shapes!

Next week is it STEM week where we will be thinking about the question: Does heat affect…? We will be replacing the ellipses with different ideas to find our if heat affects them. The week promises to be full of experiments!

Speak Up!

We have continued learning about emotions with Drizzle Dragon! He has helped us explore the feeling of surprise. This week, we talked about what makes us feel surprised. We had some really interesting discussions together. Next week we are taking a little break from formal Oracy sessions with our focus on STEM week, but the week after we will be talking about what happens on a farm!

Jumpers and cardigans

We have a number of jumpers and cardigans in Kites which are not named. There have also been several cardigans and jumpers which have gone missing. Whilst we always try our best to match the jumper with the child, it makes it much more difficult if it is not clearly named. Please could you make sure that school uniform, including PE kit and forest camp kit is all clearly named.
