Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 1, Week 7

Dear Parents,

Thank you so much for all of your efforts and generous donations towards our fundraising event today! In Kites we raised over £300! What an incredible achievement. The children had a fantastic morning with Mr Burrows. Those who chose to play football went on an adventure to Australia. Some were confused as this was called a ‘football practice’ so thought they didn’t get the chance to play football. To avoid disappointment, we are going to play a little bit of football on Monday, but no need to wear PE kit. This afternoon we all took part in a dance-a-thon, where the children practiced and refined their moves! They danced for half an hour in the dance-a-thon! We hope they all sleep well tonight.

This week, we have loved learning all about hedgehogs! We read the story of The Very Helpful Hedgehog and thought about how we could be helpful around Kites and at home too. Today we had a laugh practicing our hedgehog moves – moving like a hedgehog would if they were searching for food or moving to make a new home, it was lots of fun. The children have also enjoyed making hedgehogs out of playdoh and creating leaf hedgehogs too!

In phonics, we have learnt the sounds h, sh, r, and j. The children are becoming more confident with their letter formation now, so you could try this at home too.

In maths, we have reached number 20! This week we enjoyed learning the final few numbers on Ten Town. The children have loved counting with Tia Ten in her number show every day! We have also learnt to build numbers using cubes as well as use ten frames in our autumnal-inspired activity!

Just as a reminder

You will be given access to Evidence Me on the 23rd and 24th of October. On Evidence Me, there are several observations of your children’s learning so far this year, and we will continue to upload more information as the year progresses. Just remember that now your child is in reception, Evidence Me will capture a few wow moments, and not everything every day. We hope you will enjoy sharing these photos with your children, too, so that they can talk to you about what they have been learning as well.

This term’s top tips!

Here is a top tip for term 1! There have recently been some cases of headlice across the school, and we wanted to make sure you were kept informed. Whilst lice are nothing more than a nuicence, it is important that children are checked on a weekly basis so that any head lice can be dealt with quickly before they are allowed to spread. Here is some simple advice you may wish to follow to keep headlice outbreaks to a minimum.
1. Check your child’s hair once a week

2. Use a lice comb with teeth close together to trap the lice. The comb is usually white in colour so the lice can easily be identified.
