Dear parents,
This week we have been celebrating Harvest Festival. We started off the week by exploring the story of the Little Red Hen through bucket time. We went on to learn about the meaning of harvest, and practice our song ‘Big Red Combine Harvester’. We enjoyed learning the signs together, and we even got to sing it in assembly on Friday! Along the theme of Harvest, outside we did some gardening, finding vegetables hidden in soil, then using them to make meals in the outdoor kitchen. The children also found magic eggs with short words in to try and read! We also read Supertato and heard all about the fantastic adventures the vegetables have been on. We have been challenging ourselves to eat more vegetables at lunch time!
This week in phonics we have been thinking about the sounds c, k, u and b. The children have worked hard to practice their writing skills on their whiteboards. They love seeing ‘Fred Frog’ who comes to visit everyday to help them with blending.
This week you will notice that the children have been sent home a reading book with a few short sentences. There is no expectation that the children are able to read these words, but it would be amazing if they could identify some of the sounds in the words, for example, you could ask them ‘where is the c sound?’ and see if they can point it out. At this early stage of reading, it is also important to point out spaces between words and punctuation too! You could talk about these together then see if they can point them out on the next page! We can’t wait to hear about what you have been reading. Don’t forget, whilst it is important for the children to read what we put in their book bags, that is not the only thing you could read together. How about reading an article from the newspaper together, or maybe an extract from a magazine?
In maths we have moved on to thinking about the numbers to 20. We finished the week by looking at the number 13, which is made up of Tia Ten and Thelma Three from Ten Town. You can use the Ten Town logins on the front of your child’s reading diary to play Ten Town games with them at home.
Next week we are looking forward to ‘Scarecrow week’. We will be exploring the story Tatty Bogle as well as The Scarecrow’s Wedding. We will be challenging the children to make a scarecrow of their own, and we will work together to make a ‘Kites Scarecrow’ which will become part of the library’s Scarecrow Trail.
On Monday the children have flu vaccinations.
On Friday is is INSET day so the children will not be in school.
This term’s top tips!
Here is a top tip for term 1! There have recently been some cases of headlice across the school, and we wanted to make sure you were kept informed. Whilst lice are nothing more than a nuicence, it is important that children are checked on a weekly basis so that any head lice can be dealt with quickly before they are allowed to spread. Here is some simple advice you may wish to follow to keep headlice outbreaks to a minimum.
1. Check your child’s hair once a week
2. Use a lice comb with teeth close together to trap the lice. The comb is usually white in colour so the lice can easily be identified.
Reminders:
INSET day 10th October – a little reminder that we have an INSET day on the 10th of October, the children will not be in school on that day.
16th October– School Disco. £3 including a snack and a drink. This is always a fun event, but can be quite overwhelming for our little ones. If your child dislikes loud noises, crowds or can be quite anxious- please could you chaperone your child to the event or only bring them for a short time. We would like to make the event as positive as possible for all involved.
24th October – Last day of term.
