Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 4 week 3

Dear parents,

We have loved becoming storytellers this week and dressing up for World Book Day as adjectives!

Here is a list of the adjectives that Kites dressed up as: Brave, hurt, hungry, scary, sparkly, fantastic, lazy, brave, stunning, speedy, jumpy, stunning, expressive, royal, cosy, camouflaged, brave, sparkly, bony, colourful, snowy, magical, tired, fierce, normal, bright, clumsy, brave, beautiful, nutritious, adventurous, amazing, pink, “anything I want to be”, sporty, superhuman and fluorescent! On Thursday, the children enjoyed reading a book with the Year 6 children in the hall.

We have been busy reading a variety of stories, retelling them in different ways through sensory stories, puppets, pictures and Helicopter Stories! We have been threading high frequency words onto threads, writing our own stories and making them into books, matching the characters and front covers to the corresponding book, creating bookmarks, matching rhyming pairs, playing story themed board games.

We also started Drawing Club this week focusing on the book Not Now Bernard. Have a look here for a bit more information on what Drawing club is.

In Maths, we have been problem solving through stories, such as Handa’s Surprise, 1, 2, 3, to the Zoo and The Gingerbread Man. We have been sharing the buttons between the gingerbread men, adding and subtracting Handa’s fruit and ordering numbers at the zoo! The children really enjoyed this. When you next share a story with your child, think about how you can incorporate some mathematical skills into it, from counting the characters on a page to spotting any shapes in the book.

Here are some videos for your child to practice their Phonics:

In cooking, the children had a lovely time making peppermint creams for Mother’s Day. In PE, we continued to focus on dance and the children were brilliant at showing different emotions in their dances. We started off by moving around the room like an emotion and then listened to different music and thought about how it made us feel and we moved to it, showing these emotions.

Next week is STEM week and the theme for this year is Time. We will be creating our own sand timers, tracing shadows outside at different times of day, exploring technology over time, discussing time throughout the day by looking at our daily routine and observing the changes in apples when they are submerged in different liquids. We will also have a visit from Johnson Matthey on Monday!

Challenge: Can your child describe their daily routine through pictures and/or have a go at creating a clock! They could do this on a piece of paper or a paper plate.

Reminders:

Baby photos: Please could you send in a baby photo of your child for us to explore the change in ourselves over years. This can either be put in their book bag or emailed to the school office.

Plastic bottles: We would be grateful if you could bring in any plastic (drink) bottles which you no longer need for us to create our sand timers.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and an enjoyable Mother’s Day.

Thank you for your continued support.

The Kites Team.
