Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 3 Week 5

Kung hei fat choi 2024 Kites Parents!

This week we have been learning about Chinese New Year and Buddhism. We have been making lucky cats, Chinese lanterns, bookmarks with Chinese symbols, writing our numbers in Chinese as well as the practising the art of using chopsticks. The highlight of our week was our Chinese Dragon Dance funded by the school PTA. The children enjoyed playing a range of musical instruments, wearing a dragon costume and learning some Mandarin. To complete our week, the children did some delicious Chinese food tasting including: Prawn crackers, noodles, soy sauce and seaweed.

In Maths we have been learning 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. Children have been going on shape hunts; playing guess the shape in the bag; drawing shapes on each others’ backs and sorting the shapes. In choosing time we have been making shape rockets too! If you would like to use screen time this weekend for shape games there are some great ones here . Other, more active ideas, would be sorting the recycling out or going on a shape hunt to see if your child can spot and name the 2d and 3d shapes you find!

After half term we will be looking at  ‘Superheroes in our Local Community’ and ‘Ways to keep Healthy’. A dental nurse will be visiting the children in the second week of term, to discuss brushing teeth and the importance of dental care.

Phonics: Please help you child to access these videos:

Learning to blend – Some children are still struggling with their blending. Sounding out (Fred talk) the words and getting your child to say them will really help with the reading process.

Speed sounds- For a quick revision of some sounds the children SHOULD already know

Challenge:  Can your child draw someone in their local community who helps them and be prepared to talk about it in Show and Tell?

Reminders:

PANCAKE DAY – February 13th

WORLD BOOK DAY – March 7th

DISCO- (rearranged for) Thursday 29th February

Thank you for your continued support through a successful 3rd term at school. We are halfway through the year!

We hope you have a restful and calm week.

The Kites Team.
