Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 3 Week 2

Dear Parents,

We have had a really fun week expressing ourselves through art and music! The children have been making colour sums, they have done this by painting one hand blue, for example and another yellow and then mixing the colours on their hands together to show what colour it makes! They had a great time listening to different styles of music from piano music to rock, the children discussed how the music made them feel, using words like ‘scared, excited, calm, joyful and furious’, we then repeated the music and the children had a go at drawing how they felt as they listened to two different types of music. The children have been guessing what’s inside different boxes and writing their guesses down and then we revealed what was inside the boxes on Friday and discussed how many children had guessed correctly! We have learnt about the artist Kandinsky this week and practised creating our own artwork with concentric circles. The favourite activity of the week was definitely creating their own musical instruments! We made guitars, shakers, pianos and drums!

In Maths, we have been exploding numbers! We have been focusing on having a deep understanding of number to 10. Each day we focused on a different number starting with number 3 on Monday. We have been finding different ways of representing and making the number as well as finding out about number bonds to 10! Here is a fun video to practise number bonds to 10.

In Phonics, we have been reviewing set 1 sounds and practising writing sentences! Here are some videos to support with word reading.

In PE we continued our gymnastics focus of jumping and travelling along apparatus!

We had a very exciting visit from Science Oxford on Thursday creating our own material! We used water, glue, borax and powder paint to create our own putty, we all added different amount of borax to create our own texture, some of us made a hard putty which bounced and others had a more slimy putty! There are lots of photos on Learning Book!

Following on from our science workshop, we will be exploring materials next week. We are going to test out different materials, see which are best to make a bed for baby bear, or a nappy for a bear! We will be looking at floating and sinking, by creating origami boats and seeing if and how well they float and travel on water. We will be making slime, describing how it feels, creating dens using different materials, building houses for The 3 Little Pigs! We will also be testing out the best biscuits for dunking!

Reminders:

Junk Modelling: As we will be exploring materials this week, we would be grateful if you could bring in any ‘junk’ from your recycling, such as different sized boxes, plastic bottles, cardboard, plastic, cups, tubes. As we will be using them next week but we also have ‘junk modelling’ available during most choosing times.

Please ensure your child has a PE kit– this should include: Black/ Navy shorts/ leggings or jogging bottoms and a PE T-shirt or spare Kites t-shirt. We are doing Gymnastics this term and the children will need to be in suitable clothing for this. Please let us know if you are struggling to get hold of these items and we will try our best to help in any way.

Challenge: Have a go at some of these material related challenges at home! Materials Home Challenge

We hope you have a restful weekend and thank you for all the support you give to us and your children,

The Kites Team
