Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 2 Week 5

Dear parents,

We have had a very successful week exploring safety at school, on the roads, online, at home and in our community. The children have really engaged well and enjoyed learning about how to keep safe, sorting different images into safe and unsafe categories. We have been learning how to cross the road safely, we have been acting out the Green Cross Code, practising saying ‘Stop, look, listen, think, cross’. We have set up villages, using the blocks and images of Sonning Common on them, helping the small world people to cross the road. We have completed ‘health and safety inspections’ of Kites, using clipboards and tick sheets to make sure it is safe and identifying any hazards like coats lying on the floor and chairs not tucked in etc. We have been spotting the hazards in photos of bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms, talking about the hazard and why it is dangerous and what to do if that happens. We have been using our creativity to make road signs and traffic lights to create our own giant sized road outside, with the bikes and trikes and construction materials.

In Phonics, we have been reviewing set 1 sounds and in particular special friends sh, ch, th, ng, nk, ff, ll and ss. Below are some links to practice reading special friends ‘th’ and word time (reading and spelling words).

In Maths, we have been focusing on creating Number lines in groups and also our own individual number lines, focusing on number formation and order. We have explored finding one more than a number, finding the number and jumping forwards one space on a number line to find one more than. We have continued to match Numicon to numerals and even combining Numicon to match it to the teen numbers. At home, you could practice rolling a dice and writing that number and then finding one more than a number.

We have continued to learn our Nativity songs and lines for our show, using the stage in our PE sessions.

Next week, we are beginning to look at Winter and getting ready for the seasonal changes! We will be looking at signs of winter, thinking about how we get ready for winter and how animals get ready for winter. We will then finish off the week by looking at how Christians count down to Christmas through Advent.

Thank you to all parents who have filled in the Kites questionnaire so far, if you haven’t done so already please fill it in (using the link emailed to you) as it will help us to know the areas we may need to improve for next year. Thank you again!

Challenge: After discussions this week about safety, we have suggested to your children that they learn their adult’s phone number or their home address, in case they ever get lost.
