Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 1 Week 4

Dear parents,

This week we have been looking at being superheroes, what makes us super and focusing on Supertato! We have been describing Supertato, saving fruits and vegetables from elastic bands, squashing peas with tweezers, crafting evil peas, creating masks, breaking free frozen vegetables and practising our superhero tactics when carefully climbing through a giant spider’s web. We have continued to focus on our superhero monitor roles and how we can be kind and respectful.

In phonics, the children have been introduced to the sounds g, o, c and k. They have also been practising spelling CVC (Consonant, Vowel, Consonant) words on magnetic boards, such as pig, dot, mad. We have been having fun doing some Fred Talk. If you want to have a go at home, you could play ‘Fred says (or mummy/daddy) says touch your h-ea-d’ and see if your child can orally blend the word and do the action.

The children continue to love meeting the Ten Town characters, we have looked at the numbers 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13. We have been spotting numbers all around us and looking at subitising numbers to 3. Here is a video showing subitising, see if your child can have a a go at saying the number shown on the screen!

We made some delicious porridge on Thursday with different toppings, like chocolate chips, raisins, honey and banana. In PE, we became superheroes and acted out different superhero dances.

We took part in assembly on Tuesday with Key Stage 1, we listened to a story about friendship and thought about what makes a good friend.

We had our first visit to the library and Mrs Dunstan read us a story and we then had a look around the library and read some stories. The library is open to the public on Mondays (2.00-5.00), Wednesdays (2.00-7.00), Thursdays and Fridays (9.00-1.00, 2.00-5.00), and Saturdays (9.30-12.30). We highly recommend taking your child to visit!

Next week will be looking at Space, as it is International Space Week! Our skills we are focusing on are fine and gross motor skills. We will be creating paper mache planets, creating star constellations, making moon sand, blasting balloon rockets, ordering the planets by pegging them up on a washing line, talking about what we would take to space and much more! Here are some of the focus stories we will be reading, How to Catch a Star, Here We Are and Aliens Love Underpants. We will continue to focus on set 1 sounds, u, b, f and e. We will also be looking at the numbers 14, 15, 16, and 17 on Ten Town and thinking about representing the number in different ways, for example, by clapping to 14, drawing 14 circles, writing the number 14, finding 14 astronaut figures.

Key Vocabulary: space, planets, earth, sun, moon, stars, rocket, astronaut, space suit, helmet, boots.
