Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 1 week 3

Dear Parents,

We have been looking at roles and responsibilities this week and how we look after our environment: both in school and outside. In phonics, they have now been introduced to m, a, s, t, d, n and p and many are starting to recognise these sounds around them. In maths, we are continuing to introduce the characters from Ten Town and children should all now have the log in details to access the activities at home. The children have enjoyed activities such as : designing superhero masks; making a range of paraphernalia with junk modelling (including super hero outfits, superhero lairs and we even had a Ten Town Sir 7 helmet!); retelling the Little Red Hen in little books, creating posters to save our environment (after the story ‘Clean Up’); making potions in the mud kitchen; creating mini superheroes of themselves and making apple turnovers! Only one class managed PE this week due to Henley Standard taking their yearly photo, therefore the other class will get to participate next week for a longer session. They all had a lovely long break on the bikes and trikes to make up for it!

Next week, we will continue being superheroes inside and outside. Children will be given responsibilities for their classroom in the form of superhero monitor jobs. Some of the books we will be reading will include: Supertato, Superworm, A little Respectful spot, The bad seed, Be a Tree by Maria Gianferrari, Interrupting Chicken, and other super duper books about being responsible. In Phonics, we will continue with Set 1 sounds and start doing some blending activities with the children to help them to use their sounds to start forming words. In Maths, we will continue with our numbers and recognition of these as well as activities associated with number value around the classroom.

Key vocabulary: superhero, power, roles, responsibility, respect, doing your best, kindness, politeness, teamwork, helpful, tidying, environment, litter, recycling
