Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Week beginning 11th November

Year 2 are having a busy week. We are starting to learn songs for our nativity play. Letters have gone home about costumes and any lines to learn. We have lots of dressing up clothes in school- especially if your child is a camel or a King! -so please don’t worry and do come and ask us before you make or buy anything.

Children will be working hard in literacy lessons, especially remembering the difference between nouns, adjectives and verbs in grammar and learning how to change from the present tense to the past tense when writing. They have been enjoying Bog Baby and will be planning  out their own stories, remembering some of these grammar rules.

We have started to send out a few spellings to learn every other week. You will find these stuck in the back of the reading record books. These are the Year 2 common exception words which children need to be able to read and spell this year. Some children have a set of more simple words. Please try and help by using the look, cover, write and check method. Children ideally need to read the words quickly, without sounding out. We will check spelling in a fun, informal way in class. Thank you for your support.

In maths children are adding and taking away 10 from numbers up to 100, moving on to addition and subtraction of 2 digit numbers. We are really pleased how enthusiastic children are when learning maths this year. Any chance you have to practise “real maths”, such as in cooking, using money, measuring- even when you are driving the car and thinking about distance and speed, for example,  all help to make maths relevant and interesting.

Miss Jones’ class will be swimming this week.
