Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Welcome to Term 3!

Hello, and welcome to our first Year 3 update of 2025! Your children have settled back into school life admirably.

This week, we have been up to the following:

  • In literacy, we have started a new topic based on playscripts. Next week, we’ll be continuing on with this, working towards writing our own.
  • In maths, we have been focussing on multiplication. For more information, go to our Maths Made Clear video on the subject here.
  • In history, we learned about who the ancient Egyptians were. Where did they live? When did they live? We looked at some artefacts from the period to start to understand what we have learned about the civilisation.
  • In computing, we started our new project of making online surveys.
  • In art, we began to prepare some ideas for our project this term: making an ancient Egyptian scroll out of papyrus!

PE and swimming

As well as PE for everyone this Monday, it will be the turn of Miss Lunnon’s class to go swimming this Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Burrows’s class should come to school in PE kit that day. You should have received the PE/swimming rota via email earlier this week. Please let us know if you didn’t.

Optional homework

You should have been emailed a list of optional homework ideas via the office earlier this week. Please let us know if you didn’t receive it or you would like a paper copy.

Ancient Egyptian Day

We’re very excited about Ancient Egyptian Day, which is happening at school on Thursday (16th). You should have received information about the day via email back at the end of November. This gives you some good pointers about costumes. We’ll like to reiterate the following:

  • We do not expect anyone to buy anything for it! A light-coloured, adult-sized T shirt and a belt or cord would make an excellent costume!
  • Having said that, it does make the day more special if everyone has a costume on, as simple as it might be.
  • The time of year doesn’t exactly match a typical day in Egypt, so we recommend that children come in wearing more than just the costume! We’ve suggested that children wear their school uniform as normal, and then put the costume on over it. That way, no one will be getting overly cold.
  • Everyone will be playing part of a regular Egyptian, so please don’t dress your child as a mummy, Pharaoh, god or goddess!

We hope you have a warm and restful weekend, and we will see you bright and early on Monday morning.
