Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 3, Week 4

This week in Literacy, Year 3 will be writing some funny limericks as part of our poetry topic, which we’ll be exploring up until half term. We are very excited to introduce the children to the wonderful world of funny, nonsense poetry! In Maths, Miss Stone’s group will be continuing their work on multiplication and division, focusing on the 8 times table and the related division facts. In PE, we are continuing with our dance unit, developing sequences and improving movement and coordination. During PSHE, the children will be learning about being kind online, thinking carefully about how our words and actions can affect others in the digital world. In Topic, we will be delving into Ancient Egyptian mummification.

This term, we are excited to launch Speak Up, our new whole-school oracy programme at SCPS. We have kicked-off with a whole school assembly and a special competition to create an Oracy mascot to help spread the word. Literally.
Oracy focuses on developing children’s speaking and listening skills – helping them to become confident communicators who can share ideas clearly, listen carefully and work well with others. These skills support learning across all subjects and build confidence both in and out of the classroom.
Over the coming weeks, pupils will be practising speaking in full sentences, using ambitious vocabulary, taking part in discussions and presenting their learning. You may also notice our new Speak Up branding around school, which helps children recognise when strong communication skills are expected.
We look forward to seeing our pupils grow in confidence and finding their voice through Speak Up!
Here are some ideas you could use to support your child at home:
  • Talking about their day

  • Asking open-ended questions

  • Reading aloud together

  • Encouraging children to explain their thinking

  • Modelling good listening

Thank you for your continued support.
Reminders
Pencil case restock please, thank you to those who already have restocked pencil cases.
On Thursday 5th of February, spelling homework will be provided on paper for one week only. This is because the focus will be on homophones — words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings. As children usually need to listen to the words on Spelling Shed, homophones can make this particularly tricky to complete online, so a paper version will be more appropriate for this week.
