Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Term 1, week 1

Dear Parents,
We have a great very busy first week back, so apologies if your children are exhausted and needing some extra recuperation time this weekend.
The children have been busy settling in to their new classes; personalising their pegs, creating bookmarks using ICT, showing what they know in maths and impressing their teachers with their super handwriting.
We have explored our new class book, ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ by Philip Pulman as part of our Literacy this week. The children have been using their inference skills to analyse the main characteristics of Lila (the key heroine of the story).
We have started discussing our new Geography topic, Rainforests. The children have been sharing their facts and questions- we are looking forward to continuing this next week.
In ICT, the children will be starting to look at programming. They have been practising using MS Word and changing font, size and colour of their names this week.
We will be having a closer look at Plants for Science next week.
Homework: Homework is set up for the children and is due on Thursday. Inside the cover of your child’s planner you will find a label for Spelling Shed and TTRS logins. If you have any problems with the homework, please speak to your child’s class teacher. Children are expected to read 4 times a week and this needs to be recorded in their planner. Optional homework has also been sent to you via email, this term it is based on rainforests.
Reminders:
-Please take note of when your child’s class is doing Swimming and/ or PE. Swimming will not start until 16th September.
