Term 4 Week 5 update

Hello, and welcome to another weekly Year 3 update. It’s been wonderful to be able to do some more learning outside this week. Fingers crossed, we’ll be able to do more as the year goes on.

STEM week

It’s been STEM week here at SCPS, and Year 3 have spent lots of time working on a fun science/DT project. The overall theme has been ‘Change and Adapt’ so we have been discussing famous inventions that were created from complete accidents. We focused on silly putty, which was accidentally created by a scientist trying to make low-cost rubber during World War 2. We made our own version using cornflour, washing-up liquid and baby oil, then tested how effective the substance is for cleaning! (Perhaps you can guess…)

We then decided to compare our silly putty’s cleaning prowess with something else we could make – oobleck! We apologise in advance if you are inundated with requests this weekend to make this at home (here’s a recipe – it’s very simple!). After comparing the two, we then thought about marketing our new cleaning product by creating some eye-catching packaging for it.

It’s been a brilliant week, and we hope your children have been coming home to talk about it with you.

As well as STEM week, your children have also been up to the following:

  • In maths, we have continued to work on fractions.
  • In computing, we worked on our Stone Age PowerPoint presentations.
  • In history, we talked about prehistoric monuments and tombs. In particular, we looked at Stonehenge.
  • In RE, we contemplated what wrongdoing (as well as repentance and forgiveness) might do to a person’s soul.
  • In PSHE, we discussed budgeting, as part of our economic wellbeing unit.

PE and (not) swimming

Please can you make sure that children come to school in PE kit on both Monday and Tuesday. We will be back to normal after Easter in terms of going swimming on Tuesday afternoons. A timetable will be sent out during the first week back.

Parent consultations

You should have received a message concerning booking a parent consultation for the evenings of either Tuesday 1st or Thursday 3rd April. If you have not received a message, please do get in touch with the school. Otherwise, we hope to see as many of you as possible over those days!

We hope you have a lovely weekend, and we will see your children bright and early on Monday morning for the last week of term!
