Oracy at SCPS
This term, we are excited to launch Speak Up, our new whole-school oracy programme at SCPS. We have kicked-off with a whole school assembly and a special competition to create an Oracy mascot to help spread the word. Literally.
Oracy focuses on developing children’s speaking and listening skills – helping them to become confident communicators who can share ideas clearly, listen carefully and work well with others. These skills support learning across all subjects and build confidence both in and out of the classroom.
Over the coming weeks, pupils will be practising speaking in full sentences, using ambitious vocabulary, taking part in discussions and presenting their learning. You may also notice our new Speak Up branding around school, which helps children recognise when strong communication skills are expected.
We look forward to seeing our pupils grow in confidence and finding their voice through Speak Up!
Here are some ideas you could use to support your child at home:
-
Talking about their day
-
Asking open-ended questions
-
Reading aloud together
-
Encouraging children to explain their thinking
-
Modelling good listening
Thank you for your continued support.
