Welcome to Year 1!
The children have coped really well with the transition so far and seem to be settling in well. We are looking forward to seeing you all at our Curriculum Sharing Evening on Tuesday at 6.30pm, so that you can find out a little more about what your child will be learning in Year 1 and ask any questions you may have. You should be sent a link to the meeting early next week.
Many of our activities to begin with are designed to support the children in getting to know the staff, routines and classroom, while building their confidence and independence. We try to maintain a variety of play-based activities at this time of year so that things are not too different from their experiences in Kites. You may find that your child is very tired towards the end of the week, as there is a lot for them to take in!
In the coming week, we will be starting our phonics teaching sessions and working on letter formation in handwriting with c, o, a, d and g. We will be reading the story The Shopping List and having a go at making our own shopping lists. In maths, we will be assessing the children’s counting and number recognition through lots of practical activities. As part of some work on healthy eating, we will also be looking at different kinds of fruit, drawing them, and peeling and chopping them (and probably eating them too!).
We have our Forest Camp sessions on Monday afternoons, with half the class going each week. Next week will be the turn of the Air and Earth teams.
We will be swimming on alternate Wednesday afternoons, beginning on 16th September. When we aren’t swimming, Year 2 will have their swimming session. PE is on Friday afternoons – thank you for sending your children in wearing their PE kits on Fridays. It’s a good idea to check the name in your child’s kit when they get home, just in case!!
Thanks,
The Year 1 Team
