Welcome to term 5! The children have returned to school refreshed and enthusiastic, which is lovely to see. This term’s work will focus on investigating plants and growing some of our own; learning about the countries and major cities that make up the UK; and lots of phonics practice in preparation for the Phonics Screening Check next term. In keeping with the plant theme, next week we will be getting to know the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and sequencing the events in the story. We will also be learning about the prefix ‘un’ and how it changes the meaning of words.
Maths will be all about volume and capacity: recapping the terms full and empty, comparing and estimating the capacity of different containers as well as lots of water play and problem-solving. Fingers crossed for fine, warm weather! If you have any containers in your recycling (milk containers, plastic bottles, yogurt pots etc.) please send them in to us.
In science we will be keeping a diary of the sunflower seeds which we planted last week and looking at a selection of seeds to answer the question ‘are all seeds the same?’ In geography the children will be learning whereabouts the UK can be found on a world map, and which countries make up the UK.
On Monday morning there are class photos and, in the afternoon, the Fire and Earth teams are going to Forest Camp. There is no swimming on Wednesday.
Thanks,
The Year 1 Team
