Sonning Common Primary School

Space to learn, grow and be inspired

Week beginning 26th January

Nearly the end of January already! Whilst the weather is so wet, it is really helpful for the children to have a bag of spare clothes in case they get wet or fall in the mud. On a related note, now that we are using the apparatus in the hall for PE, the children will need shorts so that they can climb safely. They could still wear tracksuit bottoms to school for warmth, but have shorts underneath. Long hair will need to be tied back.

Thank you for your contributions to the junk modelling supply, please keep them coming!

Next week in literacy we will be making a story map for the Three Little Pigs and retelling the story aloud as a group. We will also be practising spelling some of the common vocabulary form the story.

In maths we are moving on to addition and subtraction with numbers to 20, looking at adding by counting on, as well as revisiting number bonds. In science, we will continue our paper-making – which is fun but more labour-intensive than expected! We will also start looking at the properties of different materials which involves a lot of new vocabulary: dull and shiny, flexible and rigid, rough and smooth, hard and soft. Any practice at home will be appreciated – guessing objects by touch can be a good way to explore words to do with texture.

In art we are continuing to explore colour, this time by printing with Lego. History is looking at family portraits from a hundred years ago to see what we can learn.

Forest Camp this week is for the Air and Water teams and there is swimming on Wednesday.

This term, we are excited to launch Speak Up, our new whole-school oracy programme at SCPS. We have kicked-off with a whole school assembly and a special competition to create an Oracy mascot to help spread the word. Literally.
Oracy focuses on developing children’s speaking and listening skills – helping them to become confident communicators who can share ideas clearly, listen carefully and work well with others. These skills support learning across all subjects and build confidence both in and out of the classroom.
Over the coming weeks, pupils will be practising speaking in full sentences, using ambitious vocabulary, taking part in discussions and presenting their learning. You may also notice our new Speak Up branding around school, which helps children recognise when strong communication skills are expected.
We look forward to seeing our pupils grow in confidence and finding their voice through Speak Up
Here are some ideas you could use to support your child at home:
  • Talking about their day

  • Asking open-ended questions

  • Reading aloud together

  • Encouraging children to explain their thinking

  • Modelling good listening

Thank you for your continued support.
